A utility patent protects any new or useful product, process or composition of matter or an improvement. A utility patent gives its holder a twenty year right to exclude others from making, using or selling the patented invention. The twenty years is measured from the date of filing of the patent application. After the twenty years elapse, the public has full access to the invention and may make, use or sell it in competition with the inventor.
